Membership FAQs
Q What are the requirements to join?
A To become a member you must be at least 18 years old and have resided in the Borough of Butler for a minimum of 6 months. (You may begin joining prior to the 6 month period, but may not become active until then).
Q What will be required after joining?
A After you join, you will be required to attain the NJ Firefighter 1 certification within 12 months. Classes are held at various Fire Academies through the area. The total amount of initial training is approximately 180 hours, which various based up on the Academy that you attend. Along with this you are required to attend 50% of all meetings, training sessions and emergency responses.
Q What will it cost me to join?
A As a volunteer member, it will only cost you your time. As a new member, we ask that you attend as many training sessions and classes as you can, as this will prepare you for when you are "Pack Qualified," meaning that you can be on an interior firefighting crew. All of your training, gear and other equipment you may need is paid for by the Borough of Butler.
Q What additional training is required?
A Aside from Firefighter 1, no additional training is required of a Firefighter. This is aside from yearly refreshers in HazMat, Right to Know, Bloodborne Pathogens...etc. The only requirements for more training would be if you are interested in becoming an Officer or learning more skills such as Ropes or Vehicle Rescue.
The Butler Fire Department has been a Volunteer Department dating back to 1902. We pride ourselves on a professional approach to assisting the members of our community as well as the surrounding areas in their time of need. Along with responding to Emergency Calls, we also take part in various town functions throughout the year and we do a large amount of Public Service Events throughout the year. Our theory is that it takes more to be a volunteer. We are not just the people you call in your time of need. We are your neighbors. We are the people who you know. We will be there for you whether it is to put out a fire, cut you out of a car or just because one of our trucks stopped by your event.
Our members are not just Firefighters. We are Fathers, Mothers, Brothers and Sisters. We are Teachers and Carpenters and Executives and everything in between. We are a group who wants to give back to the town that we love. We want to do our part. And we want you to become a part!
